Most visitors to Iran require a valid Iran visa to travel to the country. They are eligible to apply for an Iran visa as long as they officially enter Iran by air, land or sea or at one of the International airports. However, the nationals of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Georgia, Armenia, Venezuela, Egypt, and Malaysia are visa-exempt and can travel to Iran visa-free. If you do not hold a passport from any of the countries mentioned above, you instead have to apply at an Iranian Embassy or Diplomatic Mission in your country directly or ask for a Visa On Arrival (VOA) at one of the Iranian international airports.

To put in an application for an Iran tourist visa, you should initially apply for a visa authorization code from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Applying for the Iran Visa Authorization Code and positively receiving a 2-page PDF file is the most crucial part of the Iran visa application process, which should preferably be conducted through an authorized Iranian tour operator (Iran Visa Application). The Authorization Code is a mandatory visa pre-approval letter granted by the Iranian visa-issuing authority in Tehran to facilitate the visa application process. The Iran visa authorization code, once you obtain it, indicates that your visa lodgment is positively approved, and you can promptly proceed to pay the visa fee and collect your Iran visa at an Iranian Embassy/Consulate or an Iranian international upon arrival (Visa on Arrival). As of January 2018, the Iranian government announced a revamp of the E-Visa scheme for international travelers visiting Iran. The new policy is for travelers who are interested in visiting the country solely for tourism purposes such as recreation, sightseeing, visiting relatives or friends, for short-term medical treatment or business visits. The Iranian government is keen to ease the visa process for foreign visitors. The authorities will no longer stamp or affix visa stickers to passports of international travelers in an attempt to revive tourism as well as to ease travellers’concerns over possible travelling to the U.S.A after leaving Iran.
As you start to plan your trip to Iran, it is vital not to disdain your passport expiration date. Whether your passport is valid enough for the duration of your stay or not, you may be encountered problems with entering at the border checkpoint if your passport does not have at least six months of validity beyond your actual travel date. For this reason, you should carefully check the expiration date on your passport before submitting your application and traveling to Iran.
